The garden has four quarters. three quarters are planted with basil. one quarter is planted with sage. The strips represent quarters. So that means that three strips represent three quarters. Well one strip represents one quarter.
The garden is made of parts or fractions. Lets say the garden was a perfect square and you split the square so that there are four smaller squares inside of the larger square. Each smaller square is a fraction that makes up the garden. If you planted herbs in 3 of the smaller squares of the total 4 you would have 3/4 of your garden complete . Adding basil to the final small square would fully complete the garden because three spots are filled with herbs and the final slot is filled with basil, completing the garden as a whole or 1.
