During the later years of his life, he worked with several presidents of the United States including Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson. Johnson met with Walter on a weekly basis to discuss issues facing American workers and several other important issues including the soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. Wherever injustice and inequality for workers would spring up, he was there.
