In 1894, Annie "Londonderry" Kopchovsky, a
Jewish immigrant from Boston, took the world
by storm when she circled the globe on a
bicycle. She left Boston by ship and cycled
through Europe, North Africa, and then the
South Pacific before she returned by ship to
San Francisco. When Annie left Boston, she
had been wearing full skirts, a corset, and
petticoat-customary attire for women at the
time, though ill-suited for riding bicycles-but
when she returned, she wore bloomers, or
pants. The trip helped Annie develop herself to
be more physically strong, mentally strong.
