The cross-cultural spread of English is unprecedented. It is more widely used than any of the
other colonial languages like French, Portugeese, or Spanish. In African countries like India
and Nigeria, English is used at all levels of society: in local English-language newspapers and
broadcasting, in public administration, in university education, major industries, courts and
civil service. In many countries, like India for example, English is the only common factor
among people from various and very different cultures.
