Mercedes makes two maps:
Map A: an equirectangular projection with standard parallel φ1 based on a globe of radius 1.
Map B: a Mercator simulation according to Method CARd. 18 CARd. 24
On each map, Mercedes draws a rectangle with vertical and horizontal edges, with opposite corners at Latimer, Ontario (at 44. 361480◦ N, 76. 511020◦ W) and Panama City, Panama (at 8. 983333◦ N, 79. 516667◦ W) . To their surprise, Rectangle A (on Map A) has an area half as big as Rectangle B (on Map B) . Determine with justification the standard parallel φ1 for Map A.
