Part 1: PReP the poems.
PReP = When previewing, look at the title, rhyme scheme, and structure. Make a prediction of the poem's topic from the title and determine if the poem is a specific type, like a sonnet or villanelle or neither, based on its structure. Read the poem at least twice, looking for figurative language and imagery. Once you're comfortable with the poem's content, move on to paraphrasing. When paraphrasing the poem, extend the poet's thoughts and ideas into your own while maintaining their point of view.

Tone
Choose one or two words that define the author’s attitude toward the topic. (Tone is like an attitude: hopeful, sad, inspired, lonely, joyful, etc. Lesson 5.02 pg. 3)
Purpose
Why did the poet write this poem? (To inform, to entertain, to persuade? How do you know?)
Meaning
What is the theme, or message, of the poem? (Instead of thinking about what the poem is about, you are to think about what you learned and how you can apply it to your life.)
Part 3: Write Your Compare and Contrast Paragraph. Include all the things you wrote about in the chart.
