When Friedrich finds the harmonica, he is no longer afraid to show his face as he walks. He is willing to talk to people who he wouldn't speak to before. The harmonica takes him to another world that makes him happy where he doesn't have to worry. It helps give him the courage to go rescue his father at Dachau. The harmonica also makes Mike feel different and happier. He is able to make a proposal to Eunie to keep Frankie and he will go to Hoxie's Harmonica band. This then leads to Eunie becoming friendly with the boys and even working with Mike on the piano. Ivy is not pleased to be leaving La Colonia, but music is able to provide her with some happiness. It encourages her to try out for the orchestra where Mr. Daniels recognizes her talent and tells her to pursue the flute. (Answers will vary)
