Chrissy felt lonely. Being the new kid in school was no fun. Being introduced to her homeroom was scary. When the bell rang, one of the boys had knocked her things to the floor as he scooted past. Books flew everywhere, and her pencil case had opened and her pens, pencil and erasers had bounced two aisles over. The boy laughed as he high-fived his friends at the front of the room. Ms. Clarke was busy with another student and didn't see what happened. Chrissy stooped down and started picking up her things. She concentrated on finding every page, paper clip, and pen. Why did we have to move in the middle of the school year? Now everybody knows I'm the new girl. Chrissy thought to herself. She reached under the desk in front of hers for a piece of paper. As she did, a pair of red shoes parked in the aisle. A girl with blond hair knelt and retrieved the paper and handed it to Chrissy. "Hi, my name is Melanie, but everybody calls me 'Toodles,' " she said. Chrissy took the paper as Toodles reached under another desk for an eraser. Handing it to Chrissy, she said, "I'm glad you're here, now I'm not the newest girl in class. Don't you just hate being new?" "That boy knocked my stuff off on purpose," Chrissy said. Toodles exhaled. "That's Robert. He did the same thing to me on my first day last year. Where's your next class?" "Math with Mr. Brown." "That's in D Wing, turn right out the door. I'm going the other way. What lunch period do you have?" Chrissy took out her schedule. "Let's see, 11:45 to 12:30," she said. "Me, too," Toodles said. "I'll meet you at the water fountain across from the main door." She turned left and headed for her next class. "Thanks, Melanie," Chrissy said. "Toodles," she replied. "Oh, toodles to you, too," Chrissy replied. "No, call me 'Toodles,' not 'Melanie.' " "Thanks for being nice to me, Toodles," Chrissy said. "Hey, we new girls have to stick together. See you at lunch." How is Chrissy's problem solved? How is Chrissy's problem solved?
