Patient is lethargic and complaining of thirst. Patient appears fatigued. Breathing is regular, deep, heavy. Pulse is rapid. Friend has accompanied patient to emergency department. Patient is unable to remember if/when last insulin dose was taken. Friend states that they were out almost all night. After sleeping an hour or two, patient awakened and, according to friend, stated she was “starving” and “so thirsty.” Patient drank several glasses of juice and ate “some” toast, according to friend. Friend stated they drove to campus late, as patient had to keep running to the bathroom. Friend dropped off patient in parking lot to attend class. Friend was later called by acquaintance stating that patient was acting “out of it” in class. Friend went to get patient and brought her to emergency department.
