Maria is a 19-year-old who withdrew from college after experiencing a manic episode, during which her behavior was brought to the attention of the Campus Police. She changed her major several times and had increasingly reduced her sleep, spending long hours engaging her friends in conversations about the nature of reality. She had been convinced about the importance of her ideas, stating frequently that she was more educated and advanced than all of her professors. She told others she was on the verge of revolutionizing her new field, and she grew increasingly irritable and intolerant of any who disagreed with her. She also increased a number of high-risk behaviors – binge drinking, excessive online shopping, and engaging in promiscuity. Maria also has a history of depression as a teenager.
