Passage 1
The Making

CHARACTERS:
PINKY
PETE

Stage Set: A living room. PETE is sitting on a sofa and reading a newspaper. PINKY enters from stage left carrying a thick folder.

PINKY: I've made up my mind, dad.
PETE: About what, kiddo?
PINKY: You know—the future. I want to go to college.
PETE: I knew that. Of course. Go tell your mother. She will practically dance.
PINKY: Wait, dad. I'm not finished.
PETE: Of course, you're not. You are still a junior.
PINKY: Dad, I decided that I want to study social work.
PETE: But, sweetie, you're a smart kid. You can always do social work.
PINKY: No, father. It's not like that. I found a college that can get me an internship with the United Nations and the Peace Corps.
PETE: (Pauses for a long time) Are you sure?
PINKY: Didn't you see the world before you started teaching? Come on, it's my chance now.
PETE: We'll see what your mom says. She's going to practically faint.
PINKY: So, you agree?
PETE: (smiles) Hey, I haven't looked at your research yet. Let's see what you got.

Passage 2
The Anime Artist

Troy never cared a bit about "fitting in" with the popular crowd. He didn't bother to know what was "in" this week and "out" last month. "People do not care about my work anyway," Troy thought. His own words often consoled himself. “They can’t comprehend.” He had found friendship in the stencils, sketch board, and charcoal. He preferred being quiet and watching the world. Then, when he was utterly alone, Troy poured his observations on the sketch board. He was among the few people who knew why they were put on Earth. Despite all the odds and obstacles Troy had to face, he was going to become an artist.
