The ancient Incas of Peru built the city of Machu Picchu in the 1400s. At nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, the city is an amazing feat of architecture and engineering. It was constructed entirely of stone, without the use of cement, iron, steel, or wheels. Scholars believe that the Incas deserted Machu Picchu in 1572, when the Spaniards conquered Peru. The Spaniards never discovered the city, and for hundreds of years, few people knew its location. It was well hidden between two mountain peaks and shrouded by thick vegetation.
