-Was the last important imperial government building erected in Rome
- Maxentius ruled but when Constantine defeated him became emperor, he tried to impress the people of Rome with visual symbols of his authority
-Put his own stamp on projects Maxentius had started (like this one!)
-C. may have changed the orientation of it by adding a new entrance; he also ordered a 30 foot statue of himself to be placed within the Basilica
