Karen and Sam were recently married and are thinking of having children. Sam has a neurological disorder, but his parents and three sisters do not. Karen does not have the disorder, but one of her two brothers does and so does her sister. Karen's dad also has the disorder. Karen and Sam are concerned that their children may have the disorder. They decide to go to a clinic and talk to a doctor about it. Imagine you are that doctor and you need to inform Karen and Sam about their chances of having a child with the disorder. In order to do so, you need to do the following: 1. Draw a pedigree to represent Karen and Sam's families. Use Roman numerals (I, II, etc___________) to number the generations and Arabic numerals (1, 2, etc___________) to number the individuals in each generation. 2. Write the possible genotypes next to each individual in the pedigree. 3. Write a Punnett square to show the possible genotypes of Karen and Sam's children. 4. Answer Karen and Sam's questions: What pattern of inheritance does the neurological disorder follow? Which members of our family are carriers for the neurological disorder? What are the chances that our future children will have the disorder?
