Dead space
Anatomic dead space = the volume in the portions of the airways NOT involved in gas exchange (i.e. oropharynx, trachea, bronchi, and most bronchioles)
Alveolar dead space = the volume in the alveoli that is not being perfused and therefore not involved in gas exchange.
The sum of alveolar and anatomic dead space is referred to as physiologic dead space
