amino acids with bulky side chains are destabilizing to alpha-helices when they are 4 residues away from each other, but not necessarily when they are directly next to each other. why does this happen? what do you suppose would happen if, instead of bulky amino acids, they were charged. would this be stabilizing or destabilizing to the alpha- helix?
