Course Activity: Weathering and Erosion Estimated time to complete: Total time: 24 hours (includes the waiting period in Part C) • Active time: 30 minutes • Task 1 Weathering Caused by Precipitation The Grand Canyon, shaped by the Colorado River, is testament to the impact of flowing water on rocks. In this task, you will model how weathering from water, specifically precipitation, can change the surface of a rock over time. The weathering of rocks is a slow process. If you used an actual rock in this activity, it could take centuries before you saw any change. Instead, you'll model weathering by running tap water over a bar of soap. * 4 7 of 10 If you're using an Edmentum lab kit, remove the scale from the bag labeled "Common Materials." In addition to the scale, gather all the other items appearing in the following list. If you aren't using an Edmentum lab kit, please check with your teacher for help. You will need these materials: scale or balance with at least +/- 0.1 gram accuracy dry bar of soap sink and faucet stopwatch Save & E Part A Start the experiment by weighing your dry bar of soap. Record its mass to the smallest decimal that appears on your scale.
