Write a paragraph to complete a sample expository essay, then revise and edit both your
paragraph and the essay to make sure they use a formal style.
This writing assignment will focus on the following skills:
• Using a formal style
• Revising and editing common problems to make your writing formal

SAMPLE ESSAY
Being board is, well, pretty boring. There are thee great ways to keep yourself occupied in
otherwise boring situations like a long car or Bus trip or sitting in a waiting room; First, you can
always have a book or magazine with you to read. Second, you can watch people while you
wait. And third, you can play games on a handheld device or smartphone.
The first way to keep yourself from getting bored in tedious situations is to read. Always make
sure you have a good book or interesting magazine with you wherever you go. not only does
reading keep your mind sharp, but it helps you pass the time without becoming bored, tired, and
grumpy. Many waiting rooms have magazines; but there may not be anything that you find
interesting to read; and most public transportation doesn't keep reading materials on-board. So
it's a good idea to take control of your free time and have something to read with you every wea
you go.
Finally, you can entertain yourself by playing games. Simple, low-tech games might be
crossword puzzles or sudoku puzzles. If you have access to them, handheld video game
devices can be an awesome way to pass the time. And if you have a smartphone; there are
always many free games that you can mess around on while you wait for your appointment
arrive at your destination.
In conclusion. There are many ways to keep yourself from getting bored. Reading is a flexi
and entertaining option: watching people and even making up stories about them can also
you occupied: and playing games is always a fun substitute for a boring bus ride or perio
waiting room.
