The men rowed away from the island, drawing close to the "Point of No Return," a place where the river ran so quickly on its way to the falls that no boat could escape its pull.
Fred Truesdale tapped on the barrel with his oar and told Annie he was going to cut the rope. Her muffled voice answered back, "All righty." The line was cut and the two boatmen rowed with all their strength, fighting the fierce current that quickly stole the barrel away.
