Living Primates Observation Now you will practice observing the living primates and use the three observational techniques: ad libitum sampling, focal animal sampling and scan sampling. In order to complete this activity, you will need to use the videos that are uploaded into the module for this lesson. Ad libitum sampling On the Ad Libitum sampling sheet record your chosen primate species from the video provided. Spend one-half hour collecting data on the species keeping a running a detailed running list of all the behaviors performed by the animals include references to the time. Focal Animal Sampling On the Focal Animal sampling sheet record the data of a chosen primate from the video provided. Spend one-half hour collecting data on the species. You will collect data at 2-minute intervals. This is your time-interval. You will record the behavior at ever 2-minute interval that the animal is portraying. It is best to set the timer to beep at every 2 minutes. For example, at 2.00 the animal is walking quadrupedally on a branch. Remember you are just recording the behavior of the animal at the time-interval. Scan Sampling On the Scan Sampling sheet record the data of the primates in the video provided. Spend 20 minutes collecting data on the species. You will collect data at 2-minute intervals. This is the time-interval. You will record the behaviors of all the primates at the 2-minute interval. It is best to set the timer to beep at every 2 minutes. For example, at 2.00 there are 3 primates eating, 2 grooming and 3 walking. You can make tally marks in the columns to represent how many of the group were participating in each activity. Focal Animal Sampling (Use 2-minute intervals and the codes on the next page) Time Position Substrate Food Comments Context (General Activity) Social Behavior (type if eating) Focal Animal Codes Context F Feed: Includes foraging searching for food. R Rest: in a stationary position for at least 10 seconds after time interval begins. T Travel: moving from one area of the exhibit to another. S Social: interacting with another individual of its species. Remember to include time markers to indicate the behavior that you were observing.
