Problem 1 - Personal Property: Since the war had been fought literally in people's backyards, private homes and huge amounts of farmland had : destroyed. After the war, southern plantations and farms were worth about half of what their value had been in 1860. Many of the small farm owners had died fighting in the war, and most of their animals had been slaughtered for food; large plantations suffered from a near-total lack of labor with the loss of slaves.
1. What can be done to help the individuals whose property was destroyed by war?
