company manufacturers two types of electronic components, X and Y, and wishes to maximise its profit by choosing the optimum combination of components X and Y to manufacture. Both components are produced in three main stages: - Assembly; Inspection & Testing; and Packing.
• In Assembly X takes one (1) hour and Y takes two (2) hours to process.
• Inspection & Testing takes seven and a half (7.5) minutes for X and thirty (30)
minutes for Y, which includes the time for faults to be rectified.
In total there are 600 hours available for Assembly; and 100 hours available for Inspection & Testing each week. At all stages both components can be processed simultaneously.
• At the final stage, the components require Packing prior to delivery. Each X takes three (3) minutes; and each Y takes twenty (20) minutes, to mount, box and pack properly.
There is a total of 60 hours Packing available each week.
The profit on X is €10 per unit, and on Y is €15 per unit. For engineering reasons, no more than 500 units of X can be made each week. All production can be sold.
