Recognizing Bias in the Media
Directions: During this unit on media and elections, we want to understand the role of bias in the media. Your
homework assignment is to watch TV (amazing, right?)! Not just any, TV though. You have to watch 10-15
minutes of both MSNBC and Fox News. These are both 24-hour news stations that cover news and politics.
However, how they cover the news and their perspective is very different. (Note: If you do not have cable at
home to watch these, you can also use their websites.)
As you watch, jot down some notes about the talking points and tone of each. After you do, provide your own
analysis on any possible bias at the bottom. Think about the political spectrum, political parties, and ideology.
