Gyles Mackrell, a British tea planter living in India, carried out an incredible rescue mission during World War II.
He did it using a team of elephants to ford a river. The Japanese army was moving west into southern Asia,
advancing into Burma. Many desperate Burmese began trying to escape to India. They walked for hundreds of
miles (hundreds of kilometers) through dense jungle, with many of the refugees sick and starving. By May 1942,
those who made it to the Dapha River were trapped. Heavy monsoon rains had turned the river into a torrent.
Mackrell's elephants saved hundreds of these stranded refugees.
